Are you ready to vote in Essex County, NJ's June 4, 2024, primary election for Sheriff?

We have gathered some information to help you make an informed decision on election day. 

Essex County's election process offers diverse options to accommodate all voters. These include standard poll voting on election day, early Voting, and vote-by-mail options. 

KEY VOTING METHODS:
  • Election Day In-Person Voting: On June 4, 2024, polls across Essex County will open from 6 AM to 8 PM. All polling locations are equipped to be accessible to everyone, allowing voters to use the voting machines at their assigned stations. To find your polling location, CLICK HERE. 
     
  • Early Voting: is available from May 29, 2024, to June 2, 2024, with hours from 10 AM to 8 PM on weekdays and Saturday and 10 AM to 6 PM on Sunday. To find your early site location, CLICK HERE.

  • Vote by Mail: Any registered voter can request a vote-by-mail ballot, which is a secure and convenient way to exercise your vote. To learn more about vote-by-mail, CLICK HERE.

VOTING PROCEDURES EXPLAINED:

1. Vote by Mail:
  • Voters are required to apply to receive a vote by mail ballot. For those who registered, ballots were sent out on April 22. To apply for a vote-by-mail ballot, CLICK HERE. 
    Submission Options: Voters can return their ballots through various secure methods: 
  • Secure Drop Boxes: Positioned at multiple locations throughout Essex County. Drop-off ballots are available until 8 PM on Election Day. The locations will be updated. Visit HERE to find the nearest location. 
    Mail: Ballots can be sent via any USPS location, with postage pre-paid.
  • In-Person: Direct submission at the Essex County Board of Elections. 
    2. Early Voting:
  • ​Setup: Voters are checked in using electronic poll books, and using a sample ballot with a scannable barcode expedites the process. The voting machines used are specifically designed for early Voting, ensuring accuracy and privacy.
​3. Election Day Voting:
  • Procedure: Polling places operate from 6 AM to 8 PM. Voters who have opted for a Vote-by-mail ballot but prefer to vote in person can do so by casting a provisional ballot.

Security Measures: 

Essex County ensures the confidentiality and security of the voting process with stringent measures, including: 

  • Monitoring: All drop boxes are under continuous surveillance and are collected daily by teams from both political parties. 

  • Authentications: The verification of signatures on vote-by-mail ballots against voter registration records safeguards against fraud.​

  • Clear Instruction: Detailed guidelines accompany each ballot to assist voters in correctly and securely completing their ballots. 

COMMON QUESTIONS:

  • Validity of Mail Votes: Yes, all ballots received promptly are counted, with those from vote-by-mail processed first. 

  • Difference in Ballot Types: In New Jersey, Vote-by-mail, Mail-in, and Absentee Ballots are treated and counted the same way.

  • Early Ballot Submission: Voters are encouraged to submit their ballots as early as possible to ensure timely processing.​

Additional Information

  • Sample Ballots and Results: Voters can view sample ballots online, and election results will be updated progressively throughout election night. CLICK HERE to view the sample ballots.

  • Voter Registration: The deadline to change party affiliation has passed. However, the deadline date to register for the primary is May 14, 2024. 

  • Ballot Tracking: New Jersey's Voter Information Portal allows you to track the progress of vote-by-mail ballots to ensure they have been received and processed.
